ESPN: Prior May Have Broken Arm

An MRI on Mark Prior's arm on Friday "revealed a 'slight fracture,'" reports ESPN.com. Prior left today's "game in the fourth inning after being hit in the right elbow by a line drive hit by Colorado's Brad Hawpe." Earlier this afternoon, reported MLB.com, "[t]here seemed to be more than just a few sighs of relief around the Cubs clubhouse upon hearing that X-rays taken on Mark Prior's elbow, after being struck by a line drive during Friday's game, came back negative." An MRI was then taken, which has apparently turned out bad for Prior and the Cubs, if ESPN's source is correct.

Mark Prior's injury

What made me certain that Prior had to have had some sort of injury was not just that it was a line drive right back at him or his response to it, but how far the ball traveled after hitting him.

3rd Baseman Ramirez caught the ball on the play (Prior got an assist on the play) in foul territory by third base. The ball popped up high in the air after hitting Prior. (Ouch!)

Ever throw a baseball against a brick wall. It takes a bit of effort to get it to return to you. Tennis balls are a lot nicer to work with, eh.

Now imagine the force that Prior's elbow took on that play for the ball to have traveled that far...

Ow, ow, ow...
