Minor League Roundup: June 1, 2005

Hill makes debut for Iowa; Pie has 5 hits; Gallagher wins again; & 'Lil' Unit rained out against Daytona in what was to be his first start since 2000.

Iowa loses 6-1. Rich Hill took the loss in his Iowa debut after his recent promotion. He had to have been electrifying to watch, though. Despite allowing 4 runs in 6.2 innings, he struck out 14. He may have tired as the game went on, as he hadn't allowed a run through 5, taking a one-hitter into the 6th.

West Tenn wins 12-8. Centerfielder Felix Pie went 5-6, hitting his 11th homer of the year. One more home run by Pie and he will match his combined total from 2003 and 2004. Leftfielder Matt Murton went 3-5 with a double and a walk. Richard Lewis, recently transferred to West Tenn, got the start at second base and went 2-3 with 2 walks. Starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco had an uncharacteristically poor outing, allowing 5 runs and 10 hits in 4 innings. He did strike out 7 while walking just 1.

Peoria wins 3-1. Starting pitcher Sean Gallagher moved to 6-1, allowing just 1 run in 5.1 innings. The Peoria bullpen then threw 3.2 shutout innings. Shortstop Aaron Risk was 2-3 with 2 doubles and a walk. The Chiefs scored all 3 of their runs in the 1st inning.

Daytona had a doubleheader postponed due to rain. Pitcher Ryan Anderson (dubbed the "Lil' Unit" so many years ago) was supposed to have made his first start since September 2000, when he was the top pitching prospect in the game. Injuries derailed his career. Until he threw 1 inning last Thursday, Anderson hadn't pitched in a game since September 4, 2000.
