Sergio!

The Chicago Cubs now have two complete game shutouts this year and The Big Three plus Maddux don't have either of them. Glendon Rusch on June 2 against San Diego and now Sergio Mitre.

In his last two starts, Mitre has thrown 16 shutout innings and allowed all of 7 hits and 1 walk. That is dominance.

Sergio! deux!

Cubsnet makes a fine observation: Two complete-game shutouts by 4 and 5 slot (do I hear 6 slot?) pitchers. I'm sure it's with this possibility in my subconscious that I watched the 8th and 9th innings of this blowout with a greater feeling of suspense than I've felt in many of our close games. The Cubs apparently have two pitchers with the stuff to keep us in this thing until our creaky aces make it back. Very exciting stuff -- More exciting, I'd say, than even Derek's triple-crown chances.

Mitre

Not to mention a GB/FB ratio to beat the band (33-6!). I said back in 2003 that Mitre reminded me a lot of Greg Maddux (with the age caveat, of course). He's sure looked it during the last week.
