Borowski Odd Man Out

The Daily Herald's Bruce Miles provides a rundown of the Cubs' roster given the impending return of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. With Prior and Wood returning to the rotation, Jerome Williams will stay in the rotation, and Glendon Rusch and Sergio Mitre will move to the bullpen. Rich Hill will be returned to Iowa's rotation. That means Joe Borowski is going somewhere away from Chicago, confirming Brian C's speculation yesterday.

Miles also reviews some outfielders the Cubs may consider trading for.

pitching

I think this is more or less a good plan, given the enigma that is Jerome Williams, and given that moving Maddux to the pen isn't really an option.

It strikes me that Rusch may bring some good value in a trade.

Mitre down instead?

After today's walk-happy performance, perhaps Mitre doesn't survive (he does, after all, have options), and the Cubs send him down while keeping Borowski in the bullpen.

could be

Of course, if I'm Todd Wellemeyer, I'm not feeling too good about my future with the team after today, either.

Really, with so many pitchers performing, um, suboptimally lately*, it would be silly to make a decision based on the last two weeks. Hendry and Baker just need to throw out the results from, say, Boston until now, and figure out who is the best bet to help them going forward.

*-Pitchers who have had it rough lately, all within the last 10 days:

Wellemeyer - 8 runs in his last 5.2 IP
Maddux - 10 runs in his last 2 starts
Rusch - 9 runs in his last 2 starts
Mitre - 13 runs in his last 2 starts
Remlinger - 6 runs in his last 4 IP
Borowski - 2 runs in his last 2.2 IP (good outing today, though)
Wuertz - hoo boy. 4 R, 6 H, 6 BB in his last 2.2 IP
Zambrano - 14 runs his last 2 starts

Yikes. When you look at it that way, Borowski has almost been an asset. Scary thought, but it shows the futility of picking someone at random just because he's had a rough few games.
