Someone Has an Inflated Sense of What Preston Wilson is Worth
The Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan reports that "[t]alks with Colorado about center fielder Preston Wilson have continued this week." But here's what the Rockies are asking for: "The Denver Post reported the Rockies are trying to get a package of three prospects that includes pitcher Todd Wellemeyer and shortstop Ronny Cedeno, and also want the Cubs to pick up $4 million of the $6.3 million left on Wilson's contract."
Cedeno and Wellemeyer and another prospect and much of Wilson's remaining salary, which is too high to begin with? Would anyone even give the Rockies Cedeno all by himself for Wilson? I wouldn't.
Wilson is a nice player. Career EqA of .272 (though with below average defense). But -- and assuming the Cubs keep Corey Patterson in centerfield -- I don't think Wilson would provide much of an upgrade, if one at all, over the Hollandsworth/Dubois platoon. Hollandsworth's career EqA is only 7 points lower than Wilson's, and Dubois's EqA this year (.260) is close to Wilson's (.264).

Wilson
I have a reasonable amount of faith that Hendry won't deal Cedeno, if only because the Cubs don't have another long-term SS option available. And good SS prospects don't come around everyday, especially in this organization.
Nonetheless, I've pretty much resigned myself to the idea of overpaying for a marginal change. There just aren't a lot of attractive trade options out there, yet I don't think Hendry has the discipline to stand pat if the market doesn't favor him.
Wellemeyer's so worthless as
Wellemeyer's so worthless as a relief pitcher, its amazing that another team would actually want to take him on in a trade. Hendry should tell them that while Cedeno is off-limits, the Cubs have other relievers of a similar quality to Todd (Bartosh, Remlinger, Wuertz, the recently DFA'd Borowski) and offer the whole rotten lot to the Rockies in exchange for Wilson.
