Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds
Tonight's game:
"Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds"
Mon 7/18 6:00 PM CSNCH
------
Does anyone here remember the
Cubs vs Reds game from April 18th ?
First of all, the Cubs hit 4 home runs, including three in the first inning. Too bad I can't edit the Tivo recording for just the first inning or so.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, things got weird and ugly.
No outs and the Reds have the bases loaded, game tied at 5 apiece.
Adam Dunn is the runner at second base.
The batter hits the one bouncer to the Cub's Ramirez, who tags third base for the force and throws the ball to the catcher Barrett who tags the runner for an out at home plate.
Then Barrett spots activity heading to third and throws the ball that direction (for a potential triple play perhaps?) but it was a bad toss and rebounds off the wall.
The runner from second base (Dunn) finishes rounding the bases and touches home plate.
The Reds scoreboard shows the score at 6-5 now, even the Chicago telecast shows the same score. But their graphic shows one man on base when their should've been two on base.
Thanks to the PVR, I was able to rewind and replay this over and over til I figured it out.
Would anyone here like to guess what happened and what the result was regarding this play?
Perhaps Comcast/WGN will air this play again this week during their game telecasts...

I vaguely remember this
It seems that Dunn had been called out at third already, and the Reds conveniently did not notice this fact.
Adam Dunn - Cubs vs Reds game from April 18th
Watching the replay of the scene is rather funny. Dunn tags home plate and heads for the dugout party. He looks back at the field with an expression that seems to say "what just happened here - what information am I missing here - something isn't right"...and then Dunn proceeds to gets his high 5's in the dugout.
A smiling Nomar pointed out the situation to the umpires who somewhat remedied the call. However, I think more should've been done.
If Dunn had left the playing field after being called out (what he was supposed to do) then he wouldn't have coaxed an errant throw to third from the Cubs catcher (which I seem to recall resulted in a real run being scored).
The Cubs ended up losing the game and I suspect that this play had a lot to do with the final outcome of the game.

Dunn v. Barrett
Perhaps, but if you can blame Dunn for not keeping his head in the game, it seems fair to fault Barrett for the same thing. He shouldn't have made the throw - he knew Dunn was out, since he had to make the tag at home.
Cubs 9 Reds 4
Last night's game read almost the same as the Adam Dunn game in regards to home runs.
cubs.com... writes:
"First, Todd Walker and Derrek Lee hit back-to-back homers in the first inning. Lee and Aramis Ramirez followed two innings later with back-to-back shots again. And just for good measure, Walker belted his second homer of the game in the fourth, helping the Cubs to a 9-4 win against the Reds in front of 24,311 at Great American Ball Park."
