Cubs vs. Cardinals 7/22 - 7/24
Any thoughts on this weekend's series?
I had a chance to go on a bus trip to the Cubs/Cards game, but never got around to buying the tickets.
Now that I see the weather report for St. Louis, I plan on being quite content watching the games indoors. If you clicked the link, you'll note that the skiing comfort index is a minus one. Keep that in mind when heading to the ballpark. You'll want to pack the 48 SPF sweatproof sunscreen for this one.
If you went one/all of the games, please reply and share your stories (and maybe even photos) from your St. Louis adventure.

Cardinals fans deal with the heat
By Kim Bell
Of the Post-Dispatch
07/21/2005
But just how hot was it?
"I had water in my shoes," said veteran home-plate umpire Ed Montague after the game. "And I kept cramping up. ... But the batboy was terrific. He kept bringing me stuff. That ammonia towel was a savior."
Montague, the home-plate umpire, kept thinking, "It could be worse." It could be the old, artificial turf.
"I remember one game I worked here, the ground temperature was 152," Montague said.
During that game, Tony Pena was catching for the Cardinals and brought Montague some iced cabbage. "I put it in my hat, and it was great for two innings," Montague said.

Sandberg Game on ESPN Classic
That last item makes me wish I had ESPN Classic as part of my cable package.
ESPN Classic
ESPN Classic is cool when they're actually showing Classic-type stuff. But they're suffering lately from increased MTVization, i.e., showing a lot of stuff that really doesn't seem apropos to the reason the channel exists.
Sandberg Game --- chchchchanges since then
What changes in Wrigley, in baseball, in the players, etc. did you notice from watching the Sandberg game?
Here are some that I noticed...
1. The players appeared to be much thinner than they are now. Even with the tv on wide screen, they were still a skinny bunch of guys.
The announcer said that the Cubs pitcher, Steve Trout was something like 6'4" and 189 lbs. Would someone please feed him, sponsor him or something.
2. Those uniforms fit the players like a second skin. Those weren't baseball pants, those were tights. Didn't see any pant legs that went over the back of the shoe like you see nowdays.
3. Some players still wore eyeglasses back then.
Laser eye surgery and special contact lenses that make it considerably easier to see that ball were not invented at that point in time.
4. Smoking was allowed in the stands. Yuck!

If you don't get in ESPN Classic...
>That last item makes me wish I had ESPN Classic as part of my cable package.
I have a 4dtv/c-band satellite system that didn't have ESPN Classic available. So I wrote to ESPN Classic via their website and probably my programming service provider too and it is now available for 4dtv subscribers.
If your local cable dudes don't offer the channels you want, kindly let them know. They're not psychic and they generally respond to sports fans requests.

Cable offerings
I only have basic cable. It's possible that my cable provider offers ESPN Classic and Comcast on its extended package, but I don't watch enough tv to justify the increased cost.

Things to be thankful for...
Not in any way a complete list...
Things to be thankful for...
5. Tonight's game was changed from a day game to a night game. That was true foresight!
weather.com states that it is 99 degrees in St. Louis as I type this post. Imagine what that feels like on the field...or wearing catcher's gear, or the dark umpire suit. BTW, why do umps wear such a warm, heat absorbing uniform on these hot days?
4. That we're not a catcher or umpire for this game.
3. That the game will be on ESPN HD. Woo hoo! (WGN and Comcast aren't available in HD here, so Fox national and ESPN games are a special treat.)
2. It doesn't matter if you're a Cubs fan or Cardinals fan at the ballpark tonight, just so long as you bring a fan and share the breeze.
1. Cubs won on Saturday. Woo hoo!
and Nomar is due back soon. He was batting what? .400 in spring training. Hope he returns to that hitting quickly.
What are you thankful for?

Cubs believe Cards are catchable
