Rich Hill to Start Monday

The Cubs have stated that lefthanded pitcher Rich Hill will start Monday's game in place of Kerry Wood, reports MLB.com. Wood may have shoulder surgery after the season. "The doctors say structurally he couldn't do any more damage by [continuing to pitch]," said Dusty Baker.

Hill pitched in three games out of the bullpen earlier in the year, allowing 3 runs in 5.2 innings. Hill had a 3.28 ERA in 57.2 innings for double-A West Tenn this year before being promoted to triple-A Iowa. With Iowa, both before and after his brief stint with Chicago, Hill has a 4.53 ERA in 43.2 innings. He has struck out 62 and walked just 11 in those 43.2 innings. The trouble: 11 homers allowed, which followed 9 homers allowed with West Tenn in 57.2 innings.

Wood

It'd be nice if they said what was "structurally" the problem. Obviously, he's not going to have surgery to fix "tightness" - tightness is merely a symptom, something must be causing it - and they obviously know what the problem is if they know he can't do further damage. It's because of articles like this that no one believes the Cubs when they try to downplay the seriousness of injuries.

Why do the Cubs downplay injuries?

Has anyone ever explained why the Cubs tend to downplay the seriousness of injuries?

Couldn't say

In this case, I'd guess they're genuinely optimistic. But if they don't know (and they clearly don't), they should just say so, and not speculate that he'll be back soon if it may not be the case.
