How Much Did Neifi Perez Pay Carrie Muskat to Write This?

"When Nomar Garciaparra returns to the Chicago Cubs, he may have a tough time breaking into the lineup because of shortstop Neifi Perez."

probably nothing

That's probably good, solid reporting by Carrie Muskat, as I really don't doubt it's actually true.

Really? I can understand the

Really? I can understand the thought if the consideration is Neifi Perez against a rookie, but Neifi v. Nomar? Baker has never shown a bias against veterans with superstar capability.

We'll see...

But I don't think Dusty's bias is "young players v. old players", it's "Dusty's guys v. others." Young players tend to not, by definition, be "Dusty's guys."

I don't think he'll bench Nomar, exactly, but if he struggles at all, I'm guessing Nomar will need to "clear his head" a lot more than the other starters.

I wouldn't put Nomar in the "

I wouldn't put Nomar in the "others" category.

I think this is mostly the media filling up space in the newspaper. I say Bruce Miles has this more right than anyone else: "When he does and if he can remain healthy, Garciaparra will push Neifi Perez back into a more limited role."

We'll see

It looks like we'll find out soon enough. I just worry about him coming back and going 0-4 in his first two games. Hopefully, you're right, though.

Actually, since I'm hoping, I hope Nomar plays so well it's not an issue. But if not, then I hope you're right.

she's not the only one...

I'm seeing that story all over the place this morning...everyone's alluding to it.

I'm sure others saw the actual press conference where Dusty said what he said, as well, so no need to rehash it. I think he was just playing it safe more than anything. Let's face it...Nomar was batting .157 before he was injured, and could take a while getting back into the swing of things. While I'm eager and optimistic about his return, I think Dusty probably WILL be very very hesitant to put Neifi back into a more utility role, and we'll probably see him filling in for Ramirez, Walker, even Lee a lot more once he does go back to the bench.
I think this is a tougher call for Baker than most people think. Yes, it's Nomar, a legitimate star and still wildly popular at Wrigley...but given Neifi's recent heroics, I think we'll see a near "platoon" situation for at least a couple weeks.

The best line in the article

And who said that the Cubs don't draft perceptive players?
