Cubs acquire Lawton
There's nothing on the official site yet [EDIT: Now there is], but ESPN has reported that the Cubs have acquired OF Matt Lawton from the Pirates in return for Jody Gerut. Gerut has been pulled from the game today, so I figure it's a done deal. As far as that goes, Lawton is a better player, but it's not bound to be a consequential move, as neither one is really fit to play a corner outfield spot on a daily basis. So I'm inclined to ask, "Why bother?"

Lawton or Burnitz in CF?
During the 10th inning show after the game, Len Kasper speculated this move would put Hairston on the bench, I guess with either Burnitz or Lawton taking over in centerfield. Lawton has played in 109 games in center in his career, but none since 2000 (career defensive stats).
It seems more likely that Lawton will take over in left, and Hollandsworth's playing time disappears.
Lawton versus lefties
Whatever Lawton's acquisition does, it shouldn't take away Matt Murton's palying time in left. Lawton is hitting just .236/.328/.358 against lefties this year (splits), compared to .292/.403/.470 against righties. That differential is consistent with his splits over the past few years.
Van Dyck: Lawton in Left
According to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune, "Though Baker wouldn't say where Lawton will play or bat, he most likely will be the left fielder and hit in the leadoff spot, meaning Jerry Hairston could stay in center field but drop in the batting order."
Brenly: Lawton in CF
Bob Brenly thinks Lawton will play center.
