What if the Cubs moved Wrigley Field?

August 2, 2005 by diana

A post on the WGN blog reminded me of this article by sports writer Mike Nadel which was published last year.

Sample:

What if Tribune Co., which owns the Cubs, built a new, improved, replica Wrigley in Deerfield, Lake Forest, Highland Park or some other well-to-do Lake County suburb (or any other Chicagoland community interested in housing a big-league ballclub)?

Hmm, where would they move to? Probably a town that "sounds" right.
(this was written last year, so please bear with the former Cub names.)

Kenilworth Cubs (a shorter commute for the players)

Kankakee Cubs (considering all the strike outs our pitchers get, this might be interesting.

Kenosha Cubs (now that would REALLY bug the Gov)

Carbondale Cubs (they might finish their degrees this way!)

Cobden Cubs (it just sounds right!)

Champaign Cubs (at least they'd get great pizza there!)

Country Club Hills Cubs (try hearing that 50x a day)

Metropolis Cubs (Sammy Sosa, meet Superman)

The Meigs Field Cubs

More interesting cities for the Cubs to consider...

The Oblong Cubs - no squares here!

The Normal Cubs - are you kidding me?

Springfield Cubs (the Governor might just move to the capital city if the Cubs played 81 + games a year there.)

To stay true to the city's Abe Lincoln connection, new uniform design would include a black stovepipe hat instead of a baseball cap and wearing a beard would be required of every player.

Makanda Cubs - new uniform item: bowtie
(think Paul Simon)

Giant City Cubs - Fe Fi Fo Fum

Chatham Cubs - a cow chip throwing contest before every game!
(Yes, this is an annual event there.)

Bourbonnais Cubs - a team with players named Garciaparra, Grudzielanek, Wellemeyer, Hollandsworth and coming soon...Eckenstahler and Szuminski would have to consider Bourbonnais, IL.

Buckner Cubs (too retro?)

Gurnee Cubs - ride a roller coaster to the game

Kansas Cubs - Dusty in the wind...

Kewanee Cubs - I imagine that the seats would be very comfortable there. Recliners for every fan!

Vienna Cubs - hey, we can have daily sausage races too ya know.

Winnebago Cubs - I just like "win" in the name.

Nauvoo Cubs (Donny Osmond sings the National Anthem and Take me out to the ball game...every game)
