Baker: Murton Won't Platoon With Lawton

"[Dusty] Baker said left fielder Matt Murton would sit against Mets left-hander Tom Glavine on Friday, but will play Saturday against lefty Kazuhisa Ishii," reports the Chicago Tribune. "Baker said he would try to get Murton at-bats, but he doesn't plan to platoon him with Matt Lawton, as he did with Todd Hollandsworth. 'We're trying to get to the playoffs, so we're going to play whoever I think the best lineup is against that particular guy,' he said."

Baker is making a mistake. Lawton is hitting .236/.328/.358 against lefthanders this year. For his career, he's hitting .250/.343/.372 against lefthanders. Higher production is needed out of your corner outfielders.

But Lawton is safe and predictable. Murton is not.

Still, it is not necessarily a mistake to play Lawton against Tom Glavine. Glavine has allowed a higher batting average against lefthanded batters than righthanded batters this year (.336 v. .310), and that is consistent with his career (.260 v. .255).

Dusty logic

Plus, Lawton is batting .333 against Glavine.

re: Dusty logic

Yeah, that's good. And we certainly know who to go to if the Mets try to spring Juan Padilla on us.

Heh

Good one.
