Midwest League Managers: Harvey Best Power Prospect; Gallagher Best Curveball
Ryan Ori of the Peoria Journal Star notes that Baseball America has honored a couple of Cubs' minor leaguers in its "Best Tools" issue. "Managers at every affiliated level were asked to vote on a variety of skills. Midwest League skippers chose Chiefs right fielder Ryan Harvey as the top power prospect and starting pitcher Sean Gallagher as the owner of the best breaking pitch."
Harvey is hitting .273/.323/.514 for Peoria this season. He leads the league with 20 homers and is tied for 5th in doubles with 28. He does have a 101/21 K/BB ratio.
Gallagher has a 2.24 ERA in 124.2 innings this year for the Chiefs, with a 2.67 K/BB ratio. He leads the league in ERA by more than 0.3 runs per nine innings. It helps when you don't allow a run in your first 40 innings of the year. Since the game in which the streak ended, Gallagher's performance has been more ordinary. His strikeout rate during the streak was 10.1 batters per 9 innings. In the games after the streak, his strikeout rate is 7.4, a 26% drop. During the streak, his walk rate was 1.9. In the games after, 3.7, a 92% spike.
