Hairston Activated; Murton Optioned to Iowa
I suppose this was inevitable, but it's really worth asking what a guy has got to do; Murton hit .339/.415/.464 in his time with the club. He'll need to show a bit more power to be a productive corner outfielder in the majors, but for crying out loud, he's still been better than any other outfielder the Cubs have had for the past month.
This gets to the heart of what bugs me about Jim Hendry. If he's trying to win now, why send the team's hottest hitting outfielder to Iowa? And if he's not trying to win now, why send your promising 23 year-old prospect back to Iowa? What exactly is the plan here?

The Plan
Here it is: Construct rosters to what Dusty Baker will use. With Hairston back, Baker wasn't going to use Murton (even though Murton serves a greater purpose than either Macias or Hollandsworth). It's been this way ever since the awkward call-ups of Bobby Hill and David Kelton in 2003.
In fact, I'm not certain that I want Hendry to put Murton back on the big league club September 1. As long as Baker believes the Cubs have a remote shot at the wild card, and barring further injuries, Baker will not play Murton more than once a week.
re: plan
That's not a plan, it's an excuse for not having a plan. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of Dusty, but it's no wonder the Cubs aren't successful if the GM keeps passing the buck to him.
