J.J. Johnson's Big Night
23-year-old outfielder J.J. Johnson hit three home runs for high-A Daytona Sunday night. Johnson had 7 homers coming into the game.
Johnson was a 6th round draft pick in 2000 out of a Georgia high school. He has very slowly moved his way up the Cubs farm system. After playing 2001 with short-season-A Boise, Johnson played two seasons at low-A Lansing and is now in his second season at high-A Daytona. He fits the prototypical mold of a Cubs' minor league outfielder: decent speed, decent power, but little abiltity to get on base at a rate that can be considered good for an outfielder.
Johnson's best OBA came last year and was just .328. This year, he has hit .273/.311/.451. The only thing that has improved over last year is the power. He had 6 homers and 16 doubles in 2004. This year, he has 28 doubles and, after last night's memorable night, 10 homers.
