Cubs Early Winners of Sosa Trade
The Baltimore Orioles placed Sammy Sosa on the disabled list today with the same toe problem he had in 2003. At this point, it is safe to call the trade that sent him to Baltimore, ignoring money issues, a win for the Cubs. Here are Sosa's numbers, along with the numbers of the players the Cubs received in return, Jerry Hairston, Jr. and infielder Mike Fontenot (Iowa) (pitcher David Crouthers, who the Cubs also received, retired), through Saturday's games:
| Player | PA | BA. | OBA. | SLG. | EqA | VORP | WARP3 |
| Sosa | 424 | .221 | .297 | .376 | .235 | -3.8 | 1.5 |
| Hairston | 344 | .264 | .339 | .385 | .250 | 5.7 | 2.0 |
| Fontenot | ~401 | .263 | .372 | .410 | -- | -- | -- |
The Cubs win on Hairston's performance alone. And Fontenot may make a useful backup infielder someday.
