Cubs Trade Hollandsworth To Braves
The benefit of having serviceable and disposable veteran corner outfielders continues to manifest itself. After receiving a minor league pitcher for Matt Lawton last week, the Cubs traded Todd Hollandsworth to the Atlanta Braves tonight for minor league pitchers Todd Blackford and Angelo Burrows.
Blackford is a 20-year-old righty starting for Atlanta's rookie ball team. He has a 3.17 ERA in 59.2 innings, with a 30/22 K/BB ratio.
Burrows is a 25-year-old righthanded reliever who has split time between low-A and high-A ball this year. With Myrtle Beach, he has a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings. He has struck out 22 and walked 10. He converted from the outfield last year.
Good prospects these guys aren't. Still, as Brian C noted after the Lawton trade, "Who knows, you might get lucky."
Hollandsworth finished his season with the Cubs hitting .257/.304/.392 in 265 at-bats. He has been worth 0.4 wins over a replacement-level player, according to Baseball Prospectus's WARP3 stat.
I like Hollandsworth, and am disappointed this season did not work out better for him and the Cubs. For those who listened to the radio broadcast of tonight's game, you may have heard Tommy Lasorda, who was visiting with Pat and Ron, say some critical things about Hollandsworth. Lasorda thinks that Hollandsworth is a player who has an immense amount of talent who has not performed at a level that his talent would allow.
The departure of Lawton and Hollandsworth leaves Dusty Baker without two excuses for not playing Matt Murton during the month of September.

Atlanta pitchers
Acquiring pitchers from the Braves seems to be a fool's errand, but at least no one seems to be under the impression that these guys are prospects.
Murton had better play now.
RE: Atlanta pitchers
This got me curious about Andy Pratt. He still can't find the strike zone.
The Cubs haven't had very good success with Atlanta shortstops either.
yikes
62 walks in 74 innings? That's just not safe.
Hollandsworth
I was bummed to hear that Hollandsworth was traded, but I was rather expecting it. Since he was traded before September, he should be eligible for any post-season play the Braves get into. Glad to see things are looking up for him.
