MLB 2005: A Season on The Wire

September 5, 2005 by diana, 4 years 27 weeks ago
Comment id: 635

Fox Sports Chicago (and all the Fox Sports channels) is running a special titled "MLB 2005: A Season on The Wire".

This show has a neat concept. Since Fox Sports Chicago can't air the Chicago baseball games, they run a show about the conversations within the game. The show includes a feature on Derrek Lee and Matt Lawton.
The program includes a variety of MLB, not just the Cubs and White Sox.

This show airs highlights from the players who wore a "wire" (microphone) during a recorded game. I thought it was a fun concept - expecially if it is edited properly for family viewing before airing it.

It would've been nice if Fox had been at Wrigley for Ryno day.

Local baseball ratings are baffling
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi...

The Cubs are off nearly 30 percent on WGN and WCIU, dropping from a 9.1 to a 6.3, and they have slid from a 6.5 on Fox Sports Net in 2004 to a 4.1 on CSN in 2005.

Are you watching the same number of Cubs games as last year?

Bob Sirott in 7th Inning stretch Friday

September 16, 2005 by diana, 4 years 26 weeks ago
Comment id: 671

When we were teenagers, my friends and I would make special trips to the Stone Container building to watch the WLS deejays thru the window at the WLS radio studios. One of the deejays we would see there was Cub fan Bob Sirott. So of course, this mention in today's Trib caught my attention...

"Chicago Tonight" host Bob Sirott vows to pay tribute to the late Wrigley Field public address announcer Pat Peiper and clubhouse man Yosh Kawano when he serves as guest conductor for the seventh-inning stretch on Friday.

At the end of the song, Bob Sirott - instead of shouting "Let's get some runs", shouted "Yosh Kawano for the Baseball Hall of Fame".

Enjoyed hearing him chat with Len and Bob during the bottom of the 7th inning. Wish they had invited him to stick around for another inning. Oh well.

------

Yosh was on the St. Louis tv's pre-game show yesteraday. They had a camera angle of Wrigley that I don't recall seeing before. It was shooting down at the visiting team's tunnel at Wrigley. The walls were covered and Yosh was shown checking out what was to be seen there.

Did WGN ever return to Wrigley to explain what became of the game?

I stayed up as late as I could - finally found out the result on ESPN.

WGN had a great idea, airing scenes from the hurricane relief fundraising event at Wrigley between innings. WGN news ran a feature on it too. Check today's WGN noon news to see if they re-air the feature. WGN News anchors Steve Sanders and Allison Payne's favorite image was of Kerry Wood next to his pregnant wife.

Does anyone here have photos online from this event?

One of the problems I run into is that the games that air on Comcast Sports Chicago Plus do not show up in the Tivo listings or on the cable PVR's listings either. It seems I usually find out about the Plus games from the www.cubs.com website the day of the game.

So here's what the cubs.com website states:

Woo hoo! They fixed the audio problem on the Comcast Plus telecast! It no longer sounds like the distortion is going to blow my tv speakers. Yippee!

However, 24 minutes or so into the game telecast, the game disappeared. Instead of the game we just got a black screen til later in the game. At least I knew before watching the game that they had lost so I wasn't too bothered about missing the game. I still haven't finished watching the game. I conked out about half past midnight and couldn't finish watching it.

I'm guessing that the telecast didn't get recorded at the ballpark, because the 2am re-airing of the game that was supposed to be the Cubs game was replaced with a White Sox game.

WGN has two versions of programming content. WGN-TV 9 for the Chicago area which includes the WB network programs and WGN Cable for those of us outside of the Chicagoland viewing area.

When WGN airs the WB schedule in Chicago, the outside Chicago audience receives alternative (non-WB) programming.

Tonight's game is aired only in Chicagoland on WCIU. I'd like to see WGN carry the WCIU games on the non-WB feed. Those folks don't have access to the game otherwise, so there isn't a duplication of content issue. It seems to me that this would be a win win solution.

What do you all think?

I look forward to hearing from you.

I'd like a return to the days where WGN carried almost all the games. It is, in part, how I became hooked as a Cubs fan (my Grandpa being the other part). I think the Cubs are making a mistake not nationally broadcasting as many games as possible. It helps create the next generation of fans. Kids come home from school and get to watch the last part of the game almost each day the Cubs are at Wrigley, or get to watch it in prime time at night.

I used to race home from school to watch the Incredible Hulk reruns on WGN at 4pm. At times those episodes of the Hulk were pre-empted for (ugh!) Cubs games.

So I ended up watching some of those Cubs games instead and became a Cubs fan. Imagine that!

Now if we could just get that green fellow to hit a curve ball...

Here's a program that I think should be required viewing for the Cubs players during spring training...

1985 Chicago Bears
Under head coach Mike Ditka, the Bears finish the season 15-1 on their way to the playoffs and Super Bowl XX.

Cubs vs Astros, ESPN, Fox, WGN, Comcast...

I'm out of the WCIU area and can't even get in WGN AM tonight, so I'm down to just following the game via the gameday boxscore feature at www.cubs.com - which isn't working really well (or at all). Probably because there are many folks like myself who can't get in the game thru the usual broadcasts and so the site is overloaded.

Was hoping that maybe ESPN would carry the game tonight, but it doesn't appear to be listed.

It does appear that the Saturday Cubs/Astros game will be on both Fox 32 and Comcast.

That means that if it doesn't get blacked out, I might actually get to watch a Cubs game this weekend in HD. Woohoo!

Does anyone know where Adam Greenberg is these days? Is he traveling with the team? Is there a possibility of him getting another MLB at bat this year?

I see that he is listed on the Cubs 40 man roster, but as being on that popular 15 day disabled list.

I'm also checking ESPN's Cubs page at:

Thanks!
