Theriot Promoted to Chicago

The Cubs have confirmed that Ronny Cedeno suffered a hairline fracture in his hand. As a result, West Tenn middle infielder Ryan Theriot won't be playing in the Southern League championship series. The Cubs called him up late Sunday.

Theriot, 25 and a 3rd round pick in 2001, gave up switch hitting in the offseason and had the best year of his minor league career this year. He hit .304/.365/.391 (756 OPS) in 448 at-bats and 45 walks. His previous high was a 709 OPS last year at high-A Daytona. However, with the uptick in batting average and slugging average this year, Theriot's walk rate dropped to .091 from his .126 career rate.

It's fair to say...

...that this will be Theriot's one and only stint with the Cubs. The Official Site tells us that he's only been playing SS for the last six weeks, so his defensive value is highly suspect. That's bad news, considering that he's still not much of a hitter.

Still, I hope he makes the most of it.

Theriot at short

The official site must just mean the last six weeks this year. Theriot played short for West Tenn in 2003 and split time between second and short last year at Daytona. He's been essentially blocked at short by Ronny Cedeno and Buck Coats (who I think has been playing the outfield at West Tenn following the departure of Murton and the injuries to Pie and Greenberg) during his time in the minors.

Some trivia: Theriot and another Cubs minor league infielder, Mike Fontenot, played on the same 2000 LSU College World Series championship team.
