Sullivan Dismissive of Bloggers

Vince Gallero at Chicago Sports Review posted a Q&A with Cubs beat reporter Paul Sullivan (of the Chicago Tribune) and White Sox beat reporter Scot Gregor (Daily Herald). (HT: The Cub Reporter, via BTF Newsblog.) The difference in the two is significant.

Gregor is respectful of both baseball bloggers and performance analysts. Sullivan is dismissive of "stats geeks" and comes across as bitter toward bloggers.

The difference between the two writers appears most evident in this exchange:

What has been the effect in general of Internet baseball writing on your job?
[Gregor]: You have to be a lot more thorough and accurate, because there is a lot of information out there, and people are reading it.
[Sullivan]: I get more annoying e-mails, but that's about it. . . .

Earlier, on baseball blogs, Sullivan states, "I never read them." There is evidence to the contrary. See here, here, here, and here.

Contrast Sullivan further with the answer Trib columnist Rick Morrissey gave to a question asked in an interview by View from the Bleachers in July 2004:

I don't read them much at all, and that's a reflection on me and not the people who do it. I don't have a whole lot of time to be online, what with my job and my family. But I will say this about blogs: There is room for a lot of voices. It would be a boring (and twisted) world if everybody agreed with what I write.

Completely respectful.

Upside the Head?

While it's tempting to slap Sullivan upside the head, we could just chalk it up to fear. The only other reason I could think of is a blogger showed him up and he's still sore about it (or maybe it's those "annoying" e-mails!).

For those who have been blogging for awhile, you know the difficulty in coming up with something new, readable and interesting on a daily basis. If anything bloggers should have more respect for newspaper writers and other journalists who try to make a living on their writing.

RE: Upside the Head?

I agree. We should have respect for newspaper writers & journalists who have to come up with new material every day, especially when they do their job well. It's also much easier to respect them as professionals when they do not operate as if they have nothing to learn from anyone else.

From today's Tribune...

Wrigley's new viewing area won't allow fans to peek in on games

According to the fan blog on Ballhawk.com, 39 home runs left the ballpark last year, or about one every other game. The Web site also claimed 756 balls left the park during batting practices, or about nine per home date.

Look for those numbers to drop drastically.
