Marketing Maven Bill Veeck

INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

On a cold, drizzling Saturday afternoon in 1941, Bill Veeck pulled into Milwaukee with his business partner Charlie Grimm, ready to take over ownership of the minor league Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.

The two men were about to take the helm of a bankrupt team - and they were dead broke to boot.

With a wife, two kids, a moribund baseball team and $1 in his pocket, Veeck faced impossible odds. But as he did throughout his life, he had a winning attitude.

"I'm not as smart as most people I've run across in my travels," Veeck wrote in his 1962 autobiography, "Veeck as in Wreck." "While I couldn't outsmart anybody, there was one thing I could do: I could work harder and longer than anybody else was willing to work."

That work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to take risks combined to make Veeck (1914-1986) one of the most memorable team owners of all time and put him in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Experts consider him one of the savviest marketing minds ever. His list of firsts is lengthy - he was the first to put player names on jerseys and the first to use an electronic scoreboard.

University public relations and marketing programs today routinely assign "Veeck as in Wreck" as required reading.

Illinois State Fair and the Chicago Cubs

Speaking of promoting a team... One thing that surprised me when at the Illinois State Fair was that the Cubs didn't have much representation there.

All they had was the Derrek Lee "Got Milk" posters on display in the dairy building that weren't even available for sale.

My feeling is that the Cubs should consider their team to also be the "Illinois Cubs" and promote the team thru-out the state, not just in Chicago.

For instance, at the Illinois State Fairs they could have a hitting, fielding and pitching clinic with former players / coaches giving guests advice on how to bat, field or pitch better. Imagine a little leaguer getting hitting advice from Ernie Banks or pitching advice from Bruce Sutter! The child might just then decide to become a Cubs fan...even though his / her friends follow the red menace. For some reason, that red menace seems to get more popular as one travels downstate.

The Cubs could even sell Wrigley ivy at the fair for people to grow at home.

What other ways could the Cubs promote their team thru special events at the Illinois State Fairs???
