Hello Rex

It may sound like a cliche, but the Bears look like a completely different team with Grossman at quarterback. After 2 (technically 3) series, he's already made at least three throws that Orton simply has not shown the ability to make. He did throw a bad interception, but even that turned out well.

I think that all the Bears really need is the ability to convert the occasional 3rd and 7, which Orton flatly did not give them. Grossman certainly does.

As an aside, if someone gets killed in this game tonight, we can't say that Paul Maguire didn't warn us.

Re: Hello Rex

I don't have ESPN (yes, I run a sports site, and I don't have ESPN), and I don't know if it's possible to "feel" like the offensive confidence changed after that 22 yard pass to open Grossman's season while "watching" the game on Yahoo! Sports, but if it is possible, I felt it.

It's hard to overstate, really. Everything I believe about analysis says not to put too much stock into one play, but it was an unbelievable moment, as if everything had completely changed. The crowd gave him a standing O (he also got one when he came in the game).

That said, as one would expect, Grossman looked a bit rusty. But he's so obviously a better quarterback than Orton that it's not even funny.

Urlacher had a huge game, the best I've seen him play since 2001.

Another broadcasting aside: late in the game, Theismann (I think; may have been Maguire) said this on Michael Vick's passing struggles in the cold:

(rough quote)"People may see Grossman throwing with success and wondering why Vick can't do it. But I'm not quite sure that Vick is that far along yet in his development."

Note, he said this in a tone that indicated his comment was not criticism, but an excuse. And I thought, if Vick isn't as far along in his development as an oft-injured QB with 6 career games, why is he considered a star in this league?

Grossman

Lovie Smith officially named Grossman starter for the Green Bay game on Sunday.
