Dempster "Projected To Be Fifth Starter"
I guess the Dempster as closer, Rusch as fifth starter idea is finished? When did this happen? MLB.com's Carrie Muskat writes matter-of-factly at the end of her notes column today: "Ryan Dempster, projected to be the fifth starter in the Cubs' rotation, is scheduled to start Monday against the Chicago White Sox."

Demspter
I think it's because there hasn't been a standout candidate for the other left hand reliever spot in the bullpen besides Remlinger. All the lefty relievers have been mediocre in spring training, so they'll move Rusch to the pen and Dempster into the 5 spot. Plus they are pretty confident that they want to go with Jo Bo as the closer, not Dempster. At least that's what Ron Santo said today on the radio after talking with Dusty. But it's still too early to say that Dempster will be the 5th starter in the regular season. Hell, Wood may not even be ready to play. Could be Dempster and Mitre in the rotation....oy.
Dempster v. Mitre v. Rusch
I'd much rather see Mitre in the rotation than Dempster. Dempster, to me, is a poor man's Matt Clement. Let's keep him in the bullpen and see if he can have some success there. While Mitre struggled with the Cubs last year, he was very effective at Iowa. With another year of experience, I'd expect Mitre to be a better starter than Dempster.
