Baker fundamental about improvement

For those who can't make the convention this weekend, here is how Baker will answer the tough questions from fans, gleaned from Thursday's gathering:

Q What do you think about the Sox winning the World Series?

A I heard people said I didn't think it was great. That's crazy. Ozzie [Guillen] was our batboy when I was in Venezuela (for winter ball as a young player), so it was impossible to root against them. It's good for them and good for the city. Actually, it's good for us. You see the Bears winning now. I've been in cities where every team was winning and feeding off each other and then you start thinking you're a city of champions. This is what we want to do.

Does anyone know where to get tickets for this event? Last I heard it was sold out.

Here is the cubs.com info page , but it is dated 11/02/2005 and as I'm typing this, I haven't found any real updates. I imagine that the Tribune or Sun Times should report about it fairly soon though.

I'd like to see WGN and Comcast Sports Chicago offer an hour long special of tv coverage of this event.

Cubs Caravan will stop short of Capital City
By JIM RUPPERT
SPORTS EDITOR

Published Thursday, January 12, 2006

Today's the day the Chicago Cubs Caravan comes to central Illinois. Unfortunately, if you live in Springfield you've got to hop in the car and drive to Bloomington or Peoria.

Tour Two of the Cubs' road squad makes the southern swing. That group is made up of catcher MICHAEL BARRETT, new Peoria Chiefs manager JODY DAVIS, director of player development ONERI FLEITA, minor league pitcher SEAN GALLAGHER, general manager JIM HENDRY, new relief pitcher BOBBY HOWRY, radio broadcaster PAT HUGHES, Hall of Famer RYNE SANDBERG, coach CHRIS SPEIER and relief pitcher MICHAEL WUERTZ.

The Cubs will be at Illinois State University's Bone Student Center for a charity lunch today and then at the River Plex in Peoria for a sold-out charity dinner. That's as close as they come to Springfield.

Meet Derrek Lee and Carlos Zambrano in Rosemont, IL

Pitch & Hit Club of Chicago annual awards dinner

Quote from article:

If you never have attended a Pitch & Hit Club of Chicago annual awards dinner, you may want to amend that.

The club's 60th annual banquet is scheduled Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The event features a diverse lineup of baseball personalities currently employed in Chicagoland or with ties to the area. The attendees represent all levels of the game, from youth baseball through the major leagues, and include former players, executives, scouts and media.

An autograph session featuring the Cubs' Derrek Lee and Carlos Zambrano, Detroit Tigers' Curtis Granderson and former major leaguers such as Lockport's Ron Coomer, Dan Pasqua, Buzz Capra, Billy Pierce, Rich Nye, JackHammers manager Hal Lanier, Eric Soderholm, John Cangelosi, Larry Monroe, Bill Campbell, Bill Sharpe, Gene Hiser, Howie Bidell and Tony Cogan, along with current Chicagoland minor leaguers, is scheduled from 4-5:30 p.m. Dinner begins at 5:30 and the awards program, with Tom Shaer and Steve "Psycho" Lyons serving as masters of ceremony, is scheduled for 7.

And about those awards. Not only will Lee, Zambrano, Granderson and White Sox executive Roland Hemond be honored, but so will many others from the Chicagoland baseball world. For example, University of St. Francis baseball coach Gordie Gillespie will receive the Lou Boudreau Hall of Fame Award. Lockport High School's Jim Hall and Wilmington's Kevin Feeney will be honored after leading their teams to the Class AA and A state championships, respectively. I am thrilled and humbled to be on the award list as well — in such distinguished company.

Tickets are $50 or $500 for a table of 10.

Cubs convention and snow

What is it about the Cubs convention the brings the snow to Chicago?

The January 24, 2005 Tribune shared a story of Cubs players hitching rides in Chicago when no cabs were available in the snowstorm the weekend of the convention.

"I don't think they knew who we were," Ryan Dempster said over the weekend."

Cardinal's caravan in Illinois

As you may know by now, the Cub's caravan doesn't appear to travel south of Bloomington, IL. Looks like the St. Louis Cardinals are more than happy to travel to the state capitol of Illinois to encourage folks to become Cardinal fans. That's not even in their home state! I'd like to see the Cubs caravan (and the White Sox too) travel to Champaign, Springfield and Carbondale...and maybe even Metropolis for some super photo ops as well.
