Little league expenses

I know I'm missing the point of the article, but I found it interesting how much it costs these days for a kid to play little league baseball.

Baseball’s new ‘black out’
By Bruce Miles
Daily Herald Sports Writer

Quote from article...

Cubs manager Dusty Baker, 56, remembers what it was like growing up and playing ball in the 1950s and ’60s.

“I have two brothers,” said Baker, one of the most prominent African-Americans in baseball. “We all played baseball. Then we had more sponsors. Somebody supplied our uniforms. Somebody supplied our bats. The only thing you had to buy at that time were your glove and your shoes.

“Now, like my son, they all want a bat bag because they don’t want to stand out. They have aluminum bats, which can be $150 to $250. Then you’ve got to have insurance. You have the cost of registration for the league. You have your glove. Batting gloves are $20-$25 apiece. That can add up.”

Longtime Cubs clubhouse man Yosh Kawano is feeling better after a recent illness forced him to be hospitalized.

I seem to notice more people seeking out Yosh's picture on my Cubs website than any other individual shown on the site.

Are players "invited to spring training" paid ?

Are non-rostered players who are "invited to spring training" paid ?

RE: Are players "invited to spring training" paid ?

I don't have a source for this, but I'm sure the answer is yes. Non-roster players invited to spring training are either already in the team's minor league system (and thus signed to renewable contracts) or are signed to a minor league contact and invited to the spring. Presumably those minor league contracts include some provision for payment to the player.
