Bruce Sutter Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

Congratulations to former Cub Bruce Sutter for his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame today. I was all of two years old when Sutter was traded to the Cardinals, and as such he's best known to me for allowing those two homers in the Sandberg game in 1984.

If anyone has any better Sutter memories, please share them here.

Will the Cubs retire Sutter's number?

Any word on the possibility of the Cubs somehow retiring Bruce Sutter's Cubs jersey number?

I'll have to look thru my photo collection to see if I have any pics of of Sutter wearing Douglas Adams' favorite number. I know I've been to games where Sutter pitched for the Cubs.

On April 15, 1997, Jackie Robinson's #42 was retired by Major League Baseball, meaning that no future player on any major league team could wear it.

The Cubs won 14-3. Now that's playing the game right!

RE: Retiring Sutter's Number

I doubt it. Despite entrance into the Hall-of-Fame, five years in a Cubs' uniform isn't long enough for the Cubs to retire his number. If they did that, they'd have to retire Kiki Cuyler's number, too, as he was in a Cubs' uniform longer.

Sutter, Krukow quotes

Lights-out closer lone choice for 2006

Bruce Sutter, baseball's latest Hall of Famer, recalled on Tuesday when he and Mike Krukow pitched their way through the Chicago Cubs' minor-league system.

"All we ever wanted to do was pitch one day in the major leagues," Sutter said. "Once we both did that, then we wanted to give up 100 home runs in the big leagues. Because we figured if we could stick around to give up 100 home runs, we could stick around awhile."

Sutter, who made all of his 661 appearances in relief, surrendered 77 homers. Krukow, a starter, gave up 196.

"Krukow's an overachiever," Sutter said.

I remember his All-Star appearances--the A.L. batters were mystified at the splitter. If I recall correctly, he won 2 all-star games and saved 2. I was glad he got in, because he really did change the game considerably with that pitch. And, if you saw his interviews, he's a "regular guy" and was truly honored to enter the hall.
