Cubs fan needs help naming dog

Hi Friends,

My family is scheduled to offer foster care for a collie that is available for adoption. He doesn't respond to his given name, so we can re-name him if we want.

I haven't met him yet, so I can't tell you much about him.

Anyway, could some of you suggest a new name for this fellow?

We refuse to name him Lassie, even though most of the dogs that played the movie star k9 were males.

I used to have a dog named Cubbie. Would you believe that she didn't fetch?

If he's a howler, I guess we could name him "Ronnie Woo Woo".

PLEASE HELP ME FIND BETTER DOG NAMES!

Thanks!

Diana

Collies

I had the privilege of owning one dog so far in my life. He was a collie. Collies are in my estimation the finest most intelligent and loyal dogs in the Universe. The do bark, but usually only when they are in trouble or sense danger, although occasionally uthey get into a "herding moment" when they sometimes "yip". I hope you enjoy your dog. As to a name, my dog's name was "Ladd", or "Laddie", as in the Scottish tongue for the land whence his breed came. He saved my little girl from possible harm from traffic when she was just two years old, and he saved another dog from an attack from a vicious dog. One wonderful breed.

I suggest trying more than one name that you like and seeing if he perks up to any one in particular. Training tip: talk in a high voice when he does things right "Good dog, etc." and a low or gruff voice when he screws up.

If I had to suggest a name, of course I like "Ladd". As to Cubs related names, how about "Billy", for the goat they would not let into Wrigley?? Have fun with your dog!

FEARLESS BEAR

Meet Ronnie the Collie

Ronnie arrived last night. The folks delivering him were Cubs fans, so we decided he'll be named after Ron Santo. He does have an impressive leap...but can he click his heels?

He's been an outdoor dog for three years and we only have indoor pets, so he's going to need some training. Advice always welcomed! Right now its kindof like having an antelope in the house, but he seems to be calming down a bit. He was fixed less than two weeks ago, perhaps that takes awhile to mellow him out? I need to pick out some dog food for him. All we have here is senior food and kidney diet food (12% protein). Any suggestions?

I want to introduce him to the vet, get a file started on him. Any questions I should ask?

Photo of Ronnie the collie

The cat has been chasing him around the house and growling, hissing
and trying to scratch the poor fellow. Someone needs to tell the cat
that he's been declawed for 13 years. I don't see why the cat dislikes him so much. The dog just wags his tail when around the cat.

The first 24 hours with a new pet are usually the most problematic.
After that it usually improves.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. It is appreciated!

Pedigree

We had good luck feeding Ladd "Pedigree" brand dog foods. The dry stuff out of a bag is easy and less messy, both going in and (excuse me) coming out. They have a variety of choices as to flavor and type (e.g. weight maintenance, weight loss, adult, etc.)An occasional wet can for variety, but I'd stick with the dry almost always.

The picture is great. Beautiful dog. Best wishes for a happy time with him.

Respectfully,
FEARLESS BEAR

Ronnie the Collie update

Ronnie the Collie update

We paid the adoption fee on Sunday, so Ronnie is now officially a member of our family.

Within hours of paying his adoption fee, Ronnie found the Tivo remote and started chewing on it. (Nooooooooooooooooooo!)
Why do they make those remotes bone shaped?
(He's been forgiven - don't worry)

The cat is starting to accept him as a member of the household. The other dog wrestles with Ronnie a lot. She's 3x Ronnie's age and a bit chubby, so I think Ronnie is going to be her personal trainer. The other day the dogs picked up a toy doll (made for dogs) and started playing tug of war with it.

Ronnie has been mentioned on the WGN Baseball Blog, so he's now a famous dog too!

We're thinking of using both dogs as visitation dogs for retirement homes, kids in hospitals, etc. Both have the right attitude for such a career.

Speaking of shopping, my family has been taking the dogs to the local pet food stores to shop for dog toys. As I walked into one store I saw a dog I saw online a couple weeks ago at www.petfinder.com . When I went to visit her at the local animal shelter (before Ronnie), I was told she was already adopted. I asked the owner if that was "Sissy" and he said yes. Small world, eh.

My thanks to everyone for the advice and replies.

Feel free to write anytime.

A boy named Wrigley (Tribune blog post)

I have friends who named their kids Clark and Addison, and of course, I've got Ronnie the collie and used to have a dog named Cubbie.
(Yep, Cubbie wouldn't fetch, but nevermind that...)

Anyway, here is a Chicago Tribune blogpost about using Cubs themes when naming kids.

Say "hey, hey," Chicago, to Wrigley Jeremiah Colling.

A future Ivy Leaguer, if ever there was one.

And a perfect example of just how deeply -- not to mention, literally -- Chicago Cubs baseball is woven into the DNA of some fans.

You all remember Ronnie the collie, right? He is named after Ron Santo.

Lately, Ronnie has been running at the dog park with a golden retriever named AJ, after Albert Pujols...go figure! (AJ = Albert Junior, in case you were wondering.)

Ronnie the collie update (named after Ron Santo)

Ronnie went in for a heartworm test earlier this week and it was positive.

Today he went in for x-rays, another blood test and a vet exam.

Next week he gets the dreaded heartworm shots and a couple nights at the vet. I'm told he will then need to be on cage-rest for 6 weeks.

Feel free to keep him in prayer.

Thanks.
