Lefty Cubs pitcher who batted right handed...
Today's trivia question is from the book Runs, Hits and Errors: A Treasury of Cub History and Humor by Jim Langford.
On page 202 he writes about a Cubs pitcher who threw lefthanded yet batted righthanded. I'm paraphrasing his account of the story:
One day after returning to the dugout after striking out, his manager asked him why he didn't bat lefthanded. The pitcher replied that he just never had before.
His next at bat he decided to bat lefthanded.
Swinging at the first pitch he hit a grounder to SS Honus Wagner. The formerly right handed batter took off at top speed - towards third base!
Honus fielded the ball and had to remember that the play was at first base, regardless of where the batter was running.
Can you name that pitcher and the year this happened ?
