Puckett, 44, in fight for his life
Twins' Hall of Famer undergoes surgery after suffering stroke

By David Haugh, Tribune staff reporter. Tribune staff reporter Paul Sullivan contributed to this report
Published March 6, 2006

Includes quotes from Andy MacPhail, Jacque Jones and Bob Symonds.

A week from his 45th birthday, Puckett underwent several hours of brain surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, sources told the Star-Tribune of Minneapolis, to relieve bleeding. He was later transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

--------

Bob Symonds, the retired baseball coach at Triton College in River Grove who coached Puckett, considered Puckett's authenticity one of his greatest strengths. He last spoke to Puckett about a month ago.

"One time he told me he had to lose some weight, but to have a stroke at that age is really shocking," Symonds said from his home in Buffalo Grove. "But he hasn't changed his personality. He could come right out of this stroke and immediately want to know how you're doing. That's just the way he is."

The baseball world knew what Symonds meant.

----

Puckett graduated from Calumet High, where he was the last player cut from the basketball team and he wasn't allowed to play football by his mother. That left baseball, a natural for his hand-eye coordination.

He decided to play in college at Bradley but transferred closer to home to Triton, where he developed a strong rapport with Symonds the two still enjoy. When Puckett was inducted into the Hall of Fame in August 2001, he invited his old college coach to Cooperstown, N.Y.

"He's one of kind," Symonds said.

I took three of Coach Symonds' classes, including the Baseball Theory class. Always hoped that the Cubs would hire Coach Symonds.

Kirby Puckett

Everyone here has probably heard about Kirby's passing.

Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

I've been trying to find out when Kirby attended Triton College.
I may have taken a class or two with him and never knew it.

Jones, MacPhail feel weight of Puckett's passing

March 8, 2006

BY MIKE KILEY Staff Reporter

MESA, Ariz. -- Cubs outfielder Jacques Jones will do more than dedicate this season to former Minnesota Twins great Kirby Puckett, who died Monday in Phoenix after suffering a stroke Sunday at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"My career will be dedicated to him,'' said Jones, who played his first seven seasons with the Twins before signing with the Cubs in December, "because that's how much he meant to me and how much he meant to people outside baseball he came in contact with.

Chicago Tribune Live! (Comcast Sports Chicago)

I just starting Tivoing the Chicago Tribune Live program on Comcast Sports Chicago and found that my old college professor was on Tuesday's show!

Tuesday:

Tribune's Teddy Greenstein and John Mullin,
WMVP's Jeff Dickerson, Kirby Puckett's former coach at Triton College Bob Symonds with Tribune's Mark Gonzales from Sox camp and Chris Duhon from the United Center

Keep checking here for upcoming guests:

BTW, if anyone from this show is reading this, I have two requests.

1. Include guest info in tv listings so that Tivo users running keyword searches can better find the shows that interest them.

2. Have a team logo displayed when talking about a specific team so that those of us who only watch during the Cubs discussions can easily find those discussions.

Thanks!
