Guzman Has Successful 2006 Debut

Notes from Monday's 12-3 win over Oakland:

  • Angel Guzman threw 2 shutout innings in Monday's spring training game, his first action of the year. He allowed 1 hit, walked 1, and struck out 1. Several days ago, Larry Rothschild said that "Guzman is back to where he was before his injuries." It seems like forever ago that he had his great 2003 spring, causing all the excitement.
  • Todd Wellemeyer didn't have as good as a day as Guzman, and it's Wellemeyer who is battling for a major league job. His achilles' heel--control--struck again. 2 walks and 2 hits in 1 inning, escaping after having allowed just 1 run. In two appearances this spring, Wellemeyer's line is 3 innings, 6 runs, 10 hits, 3 walks, and 0 strikeouts. Let's hope Wellemeyer just doesn't have a feel for his changeup yet, because he's clearly fooling no one. Otherwise, Wellemeyer is out of options, and the Cubs may regret not shipping him to Colorado in the offseason when the Rockies showed interest.
  • Nice to see Scott McClain getting a chance with the A's. He hit his second homer of the spring today.
  • Baker says that Ronny Cedeno is pressing a bit. Already? Does that have to be said already? Anyway, he doubled in today's game.
  • Brian Dopirak, who had a disappointing year for high-A Daytona last year and will likely play this year at double-A West Tenn, hit his second homer of the spring. Todd Walker and Angel Pagan also homered.
