Zambrano Allows 4 Runs in WBC

Carlos Zambrano struggled in Venezuela's opening round WBC game against the Dominican Republic today, allowing 4 runs in 2.2 innings. Zambrano relieved Johan Santana with 1 out and 1 on in the 4th inning, getting a flyout and a strikeout to end the inning. Zambrano then recorded 2 outs in the top of the 5th before faltering. He walked both Albert Pujols and David Ortiz, then gave up a single to Moises Alou and a three-run homer to Adrian Beltre (certainly a better lineup than Zambrano would have faced in the Cactus League). Zambrano then gave up another hit to Juan Encarnacion before ending the inning with a groundout from Alberto Castillo. Zambrano struggled with his contol again in the 6th, walking Willy Tavares to open the inning before Alfonso Soriano grounded into a double-play. Zambrano struck out Miguel Tejada to end the inning, his final of the day. Zambrano threw 56 pitches, only 28 of which were strikes. As of this writing, Venezuela is losing 8-5 in the top of the 9th.
