Guzman Allows 2 Runs in 3 Innings; Hill Throws 3 Shutout Innings
If Angel Guzman has moved to the head of the pack in the battle to take Mark Prior's spot in the rotation, he did not stake a claim to the job in today's start. But he also didn't take himself out of the running. Guzman walked the bases loaded in the 1st inning and then allowed a 2-run double to Shawn Green, before retiring the last 7 batters he faced. Guzman struck out 1.
Another 5th starter candidate, Rich Hill, relieved Guzman today and threw 3 shutout innings, not allowing a hit, while striking out 5. Unfortunately, he continued to struggle with his control, walking 3. A third candidate, Sean Marshall, will get the start in tomorrow's game. Marshall has yet to allow a run in 3.1 innings this spring.
A few other game notes:
- Ronny Cedeno has now hit safely in 3 straight games, raising his line to .206/.250/.265 this spring. He had been hitting below .150.
- Matt Murton went 2-3 and is now hitting .517/.576/.759 this spring.
