Sammy Sosa Smiling Again

Sosa's back to blowing kisses after homers (Jorge Arangure Jr., ESPN The Magazine, 6/16/2007)

Quote:
But Sammy could avoid being Sammy for only so long. So here he is once again as Sammy, the larger-than-life figure with the beaming smile, in the Texas Rangers' clubhouse, only one home run shy of 600. He is blowing kisses and hopping after homers once again for Texas, the only team that offered Sosa an opportunity to play in 2007. Entering Saturday's game against the Reds, Sosa is hitting .252 with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs.

Sosa Works Out With Rangers

"The Rangers' offseason took a surprising twist on Monday when they worked out free-agent outfielder Sammy Sosa at Ameriquest Field in Arlington," reports MLB.com. "Sosa also met with general manager Jon Daniels over dinner on Monday night to discuss a one-year, non-roster contract with an invitation to Spring Training." (Hat tip: Wrigleyville.)

Sosa had earlier indicated that he would take a non-guaranteed contract this year.

Rangers, well-traveled Lofton reportedly close to agreement

One potential stop-gap center fielder for the Chicago Cubs may soon be off of the market. The AP reports:

Outfielder Kenny Lofton and the Texas Rangers are closing in on a contract agreement.

While a deal hasn't yet been reached, a person familiar with the negotiations said Sunday the sides are getting close.
