Category: Sean Gallagher
As expected, the Cubs demoted Rich Hill to triple-A Iowa today, reports the Daily Herald. They called up Sean Gallagher to take his spot on the roster. Gallagher will go to the bullpen and Jon Lieber will go to the rotation. Sean Marshall remains in the bullpen, despite the fact that after last night's game Lou Piniella said, "I would think that if we did something, we'd put Marshall in the rotation, for now." Marshall has not thrown more than an inning in a game this year since being recalled, though, and in his last four appearances he has faced just five batters. It would take some time before he was fully stretched out. One of the strange things that occurred this spring was the Cubs not giving Marshall a chance to make the rotation.
The last time Hill was at Iowa, in 2006, he was utterly dominant in 100 innings.
The Cubs activated Ryan Dempster from the disabled list today, allowing Bob Howry to return to a setup role. Along with Carlos Marmol, the Cubs now have two solid setup men, though Lou Piniella loses some freedom. Sean Gallagher was optioned back to Iowa.
The Cubs are, likely temporarily, going to go with 11 pitchers, as they demoted Sean Gallagher to Iowa after today's 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers. Aramis Ramirez will come off the disabled list tomorrow. Gallagher allowed 6 runs in his 5.2 innings, over 3 relief appearances. Why was he called up again, and taken out of his rotation spot in double-A? What Brian C calls the "Random Transaction Generator," perhaps?
The Angel Guzman as future closer story is certainly on hold, following his being on placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday. Guzman has right forearm tightness. Assistant GM Randy Bush said, "He has some injury history going back [I'll say!], so we feel for his own peace of mind we'll let the doctor look at it."
Carlos Marmol will now be the new late-inning fad.
It is interesting that the Cubs decided to call up Sean Gallagher, 21, from double-A Tennessee to take Guzman's spot. Gallagher has only pitched out of the bullpen one time in his minor league career, that occurring with the Cubs' rookie ball team in Mesa in 2004. He will also have to added to the 40-man roster. Who will be taken off? Perhaps Wade Miller or Brian Dopirak. Meanwhile, the Cubs leave Neal Cotts, Clay Rapada, and Rocky Cherry -- all already on the 40-man roster -- in Iowa.

Sean Gallagher, Ryan O'Malley, Jake Fox, Eric Patterson, Tyler Colvin, Randy Wells, Carmen Pignatiello, Adam Harben, Mike Kinkade, Casey McGehee, Chris Walker, Jason Anderson, Ben Howard, John Webb, Les Walrond and Koyie Hill.
