Leyland Doesn't Sugarcoat the Neifi Perez Acquisition

When was the last time someone from the Cubs' management -- field or front office -- was this honest?:

Neifi’s going to have to prove us wrong this spring because he has not been a good acquisition up to this point. . . . [H]e showed absolutely nothing when he came over.

That's Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland describing Neifi Perez's play last year after Jim Hendry managed to trade him to Detroit. The transcript comes from the Detroit Tigers Weblog. (Hat tip: The Cub Reporter and Bleed Cubbie Blue.) After the trade, Perez hit .200/.235/.215 in 70 plate appearances. He is set to make $2.5M in 2007, under a contract he signed with the Cubs.
