FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that Kaz Matsui is about to sign a three-year, $15M contract with the Houston Astros, even though the Cubs made him a similar offer. I understand that Matsui is a fine fielder (quite good, in fact, according to Baseball Prospectus' numbers), but a) he had just an 87 OPS+ last year; b) he has a 82 OPS+ for his career; c) he's 32; d) the most games he has played in a season in his four-year MLB career is 114; and e) the Cubs already carry second basemen like Tony LaRussa carries LOOGYs. As Wrigleyville says, the Astros are saving Jim Hendry here.
Meanwhile, a couple of the other division foes are signing Cubs' rejects to multi-million dollar contracts. The Brewers sign the catcher who lost his starting catcher on a playoff team to the guy just getting some filler time in September, for $4.25M no less. And the Cardinals may be smart, but they did just sign Cesar Izturis to be their starting shortstop.
"The Chicago Cubs dealt Cesar Izturis to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday" along with cash for a player to be named later reports MLB.com. They also called up Jake Fox from AA Tennessee.
Izturis had lost his starting shortstop job to Ryan Theriot, as he has only started two games in July. He hit .246/.298/.304 for the Cubs this year in 207 plate appearances, after coming over from the Dodgers last year in the Greg Maddux trade. I noted then that "Izturis is a younger Neifi Perez." In 2006, he hit .233/.282/.260 for the Cubs in 79 plate appearances. Despite a defensive reputation, having won a Gold Glove in 2004, Baseball Prospectus rates him as just 2 runs above average at shortstop during his career.
Here's what the Chicago Tribune's Mike Downey had to say when the Cubs traded Maddux for Izturis last year:
The Cubs have starting pitchers hitting better than shortstops Cesar Izturis and Ronny Cedeno. Lou Piniella has apparently had enough. Ryan Theriot is today's starter at short.

One of the duties of new Cubs bench coach Alan Trammell is to work with the
infield.
The four-time Gold Glove-winning shortstop, who helped turn 1,321 double plays
in his career, is looking forward to his duties with an infield that has two
Gold Glove players and a pair of question marks.

Aramis
Ramirez is not looking back. He is looking ahead.
Ramirez opened a three-game series at Philadelphia on Monday night with a
two-homer, seven-RBI night, bringing his season totals to 35 homers and 110
RBIs.
Those numbers are respectable, and with an "out" clause in his four-year
contract this winter, he could find some huge money on the free agent market.

The Cubs figure to activate shortstop Cesar Izturis from the disabled
list either Monday or Tuesday, and they need to figure out what to do with
rookie infielder Ronny Cedeno.
Cedeno, who has been subbing for Izturis, likely will move back to second base.
However, the Cubs have been impressed with Ryan Theriot's play at second
in recent weeks.
The Cubs are going to have a little less time to see their apparent 2007 starting shortstop. They placed Cesar Izturis on the disabled list today with a strained right hamstring. Ronny Cedeno will take back over at shortstop and the Cubs have recalled OF/IF Buck Coats from triple-A Iowa to take Izturis's place on the roster. Coats has hit .277/.336/.366 for Iowa this year.
Meanwhile, Ryan O'Malley, the starting pitcher in tonight's game, left in the 5th inning after recording the first two outs. His injury is currently unknown. Glendon Rusch replaced him and allowed 3 runs in 0.2 innings.
Izturis has hit just .233/.292/.267 since coming over from the Dodgers on July 31.
